Sheep, Simply Themselves.

Photographing sheep began as part of a project I got involved in, but developed into a standalone theme that I enjoy.


Sheep are rich in symbolic meaning across cultures, religions, and traditions, in both positive and negative ways. They stand for innocence and purity, vulnerability, renewal and rebirth, but also for blind conformity, weakness, naivety, and lack of autonomy. This rich symbolism gave them a role in the project I am working on.

Leaving symbolism aside for now—and saving that for when I introduce the project—here are some photographs of the sheep I spent time with over the past months.


After all, sheep are simply animals: gentle and non-aggressive, with strong memory and recognition, social, curious, and deeply maternal. At times, they’re wonderfully funny too. I grew close to them during my days on Lemnos this summer.
